In response to rapid changes in the planning sector and the need to work faster and smarter, Hayes Davidson has developed HDScope, a mobile, on-site impact assessment tool which helps mitigate risk in early stage consultation and planning assessments. HDScope facilitates early collaboration between consultants, informing quick, clear decision-making, reducing risk and saving time and money.

An on-site impact assessment tool combining accuracy and mobility
HDScope
Hayes Davidson
We’ve created a go-anywhere, location-responsive tool, that can quickly assess the visual impacts of a scheme with a very high degree of accuracy. Using highly compatible iOS software, HDScope overlays the camera on any mobile device with a preloaded project model, combining real world context with the ability to instantly assess visual impacts, or switch between different models to assess massing or height options and see a live version of their potential impact. Screenshots and recordings, with gps references, can be downloaded from the device straight into assessment reports, and used to review as the scheme develops.
HDScope can illustrate multiple models at any time and allows for total freedom of movement while maintaining the model’s accurate position in the app:
Designed for use by anyone working in the built environment, HDScope will provide developers, planners, architects and townscape and heritage consultants with fast, accurate, real-time impact assessments, taking much of the guesswork out of the current process. Primarily of value in early stage assessments through to a full planning application, HDScope can also add value at site acquisition stage when assessing commercial potential or key site constraints.
Still in development, we are using HDScope as an integrated part of our offer and service, working in partnership with clients to develop its capabilities and potential. We anticipate extending its future use to local communities or neighbourhood groups, and facilitating wider participation in the planning process.
We are now using the app on live projects, and so far the feedback has been incredibly positive, with key decisions being made on-site based on the information provided by HDScope, such as sensitive view selection, or design amendments based on contentious view corridors.
We have also given demonstrations to our clients in New York, Vancouver and Hawaii, which have highlighted the potential for the tool in planning processes in other cities, as well as marketing, sales and leasing environments. It could be invaluable for explaining future developments to interested buyers and future tenants for office and residential schemes, or giving context to how surrounding developments will affect the future residents of a building.
